Sorry for the long silence!

My last news update was way back on the 1st August last year and was pretty upbeat at a time when I was looking forward to moving my entire business to the nearby Highbullen Hotel in the September.

However, soon after posting my last message it became increasingly apparent to me that the ambitious plans for dining at Highbullen were being downgraded and the promised and essential new kitchen seemed as far away as ever. As these plans formed the sole basis for my intended move to Highbullen I had little option other than to pull out of the move. Since then of course matters have gone from bad to worse at Highbullen with no sign of any of the intended investment and I guess there must be real concerns as to its future: a great shame.

For my part, this abrupt end to what should have been an exciting new venture, meant that a new restaurant of my own was never going to be a short term option. I needed to find work! I regret that this meant me leaving the area and in October last year I accepted the post of head chef at a prominent private members’ club in the South East.

I am sorry that I’ve been so tardy in updating my site with the turn of events since last July. I’ve no real excuses other than starting a new and demanding job does tend to focus one’s mind on the here and now! However, I’m glad to have been able to be able to do so now: better late than never! As for the future, well if the right opportunity arises I’d love to be back with a new restaurant. I’ll let you know if and when there are any developments on this front. In the meantime, I will not forget the good times in Barnstaple and my many loyal customers, dining club members, cookery school students and wine tasting aficionados: best wishes to all of you and thank you so much for your support.

Restaurant in Barnstaple now closed

Saturday dinner was my last service at the Old Custom house and as of yesterday my lease on the building was terminated and the Old Custom House is once again back in the hands of landlord Philip Milton.  I and some of my staff are moving to the Highbullen Hotel and Country Club where I will take charge of all food service operations to include a new Restaurant James Duckett at the Highbullen Hotel with an anticipated commencement in mid/late October.  Please see the new front page to my website for further information.  In due course my entire website will be updated to reflect my move to Highbullen.

Final Dining Club dinner at the Old Custom House

Another great night yesterday but tinged with sadness as the Dining Club bid farewell to the Old Custom House, its home for the last 19 dinners.

I've every intention of continuing the Strand Dining Club when I reopen my restaurant at the Highbullen Hotel and Country Club in the autumn.  Provided there is sufficient interest we'll lay on transport between Barntaple and Highbullen, so no reason for members not to contine to enjoy their monthly Club dinners!

July Dining Club dinner menu

The menu for next Thursday's Dining Club dinner (21st July) is now available.  Places are already filling up fast and any members wishing to come along and who have not reserved their places already should do so as soon as possible.  Please call Ellie on 01271 370123.

Last week's Asian fusion cuisine evening

Last weeks Asian fusion cuisine dinner lived up to its promise.  I had a great time working with Phansit and I'm pretty sure our 50 guests were pleased with our collaboration.  Sarah, Phansit's wife who helped us by introducing each of our dishes has sent me some photos which I've posted on my Facebook page

£1,140 raised for the Calvert Trust Exmoor

At last, we've handed over the moneys raised at our Spanish themed dinner in April, together with the Gift Aid declarations our guests signed.  The total amount raised was £1,140 which with the gift aid declarations has meant the Trust will benefit by around £1,400.

Hese's a photo of me, Jess amd Matt with Ann Cummings, chair of the Friends of Calvert Trust Exmoor, handing over the proceeds at my restaurant.
